As I recall, photographer Peggy Darnell made this costume for one of her children on a previous Halloween and loaned it to us for me to use in 1978. This (rather rumpled) photo actually appeared in the October 31, 1979 edition of the Newport Ensign, according to my Mom's notation on the back. So their claim that "the Fishman" (Peggy's name for the costume, I guess — I called myself a "Sea Monster") would be walking the streets in Halloween 1979 appears to have been false. Not sure if the photo was taken a year prior to this issue, or if Peggy had me dress up in the costume again for a photo shoot a few days prior to Halloween '79.
Back in '78, my parents took a Super-8 (?) movie of me making "scary swimming motions" and "sea monster sounds" in the costume — I'll have to put it up once I've digitized it. Also that year, I won the following awards (which of course I can't take any credit for other than "acting the part") at the school costume contest:
I won Most Original Costume at both the class and entire-school levels, and I think the Best All Around Costume award was at the school level.
