(any) Animation / Anime Nutcracker Fantasy 1991 VHS is out-of-print as of 2007-02-17, and no upcoming DVD listed on amazon.com. IMDb doesn't show there to have been an LD. This is an English dub of a 1979 Japanese stop-motion animation children's film, so there may be a Japanese version in print -- haven't checked.
(any) Feature (Sci-Fi) Damnation Alley (widescreen) No region 1 DVD as of 2005-11-15 (just a region 0 Hong Kong DVD that's Pan & Scan, which I now have). There does not appear to have ever been an NTSC LaserDisc, though there was apparently a PAL (UK) one (not sure whether it was letterboxed or not). There was also a Pan & Scan VHS which is now out-of-print.
(any) Special Interest (Documentary) Hotel Torgo This documentary on the making of Manos: The Hands of Fate has never been released on VHS or DVD as of 2007-06-13. The director stated in an IMDb.com post in 2005 that he was working to get the film either on TV or DVD. He posted an update in June 2007 that he's currently working with a distributor and expects the film to be on TV by the end of the year.
(any) TV (Drama / Japanese) Akuma no KISS Tokiwa Takako's first TV "dorama", from summer 1993, in which she reportedly bares her breasts. Probably only available on VHS in Japan, and probably out-of-print on that.
(any) TV (Concert) US Festival '83 Day One A 90-minute Showtime special featuring Oingo Boingo et al. Title may not be exact.
(any) TV (Concert) US Festival '83 Day Three A 90-minute Showtime special featuring U2 et al. Title may not be exact.
DVD Animation Best of Ren & Stimpy, The Out-of-print 3-volume DVD set that was available direct from Time-Life in 2003. Episodes are from Nickelodeon's broadcast masters, which means in some cases less cuts (e.g. in "Ren's Toothache", and presumably with the fade-to-blacks) and in some cases more cuts than the "UNCUT" Season 1 & 2 DVD set from Paramount.
DVD Animation History Of Beavis And Butt-Head, The This 2-DVD set was recalled just after its release in 2002-09, due to footage and stills in the animated menus that Paramount neglected to obtain permission for. eBay reportedly shuts down auctions of it.
DVD Anime Battle Angel Out-of-print as of 2001-05-12.
DVD Feature (Horror) American Werewolf In London, An Out-of-print as of 2001-05-12.
DVD Feature (Sci-Fi) Dune (Long TV Version) Japanese region 2 DVD. As of 2001-05-16, has never been released on video in the U.S.
DVD Feature (Sci-Fi) eXistenZ (Canadian import version) U.S. version has no special features besides theatrical trailer, but Canadian import has commentary by David Cronenberg, Peter Suschitzky, and Jim Isaac, "The Invisible Art Of Carol Spier", a theatrical trailer, and English as well as French dialogue tracks.
DVD Feature (Comedy) Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1999 Widescreen Collection release) Out-of-print as of 2006-09-16. The new "Bueller... Bueller... Edition" does not have the John Hughes commentary track.
DVD Feature (Comedy / Drama / Japanese) Geroppa! (Get Up!) A Tokiwa Takako movie playing in theaters in Japan as of 2003-08. Not sure if it's out yet on DVD yet. Probably it'll only come out in Japan, but it's possible that there'll be a Hong Kong version with English subtitles, since Takako has done two HK films. I'm not positive "(Get Up!)" is officially part of the title.
DVD Feature (Comedy / Sci-Fi) Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie (10th Anniversary Hamdinger Edition) Fan-produced special edition rumored to become available in 2006. If this never turns up, I'd like to get the 2003 Special Edition version produced by the same guy. That 2-disc set was available at conventions and on the Internet (I can't seem to find it available now) and "has the same print of the film as the 1998 DVD, along with the theatrical trailer, several television ads, a review from E! Television on the first disc; and has an hour long presentation on the second disc from the second official MST3K convention hosted by various members of Best Brains writers/performers. This presentation has a picture slideshow showing behind the scenes footage (along with BBI commentary), the 'lost' theme song, a general discussion of the genesis and production of the film from Best Brains, and the cut host segment and the original, alternate ending to the film. This version of the film is recognizable for the tagline on the front cover that reads 'Every year Hollywood makes hundereds of special editions. This isn't one of them', a parody of the original tagline."
DVD Feature (Comedy / Drama) Parenthood Out-of-print as of 2004-10-16. This release is not letterboxed and has no special features, but I haven't seen any news of a better version being worked on.
DVD Feature (Drama / Japanese) Sennen No Koi - Hikaru Genji Monogatari (AKA Genji: A Thousand-Year Love) A Tokiwa Takako movie on Japanese region 2 DVD, no doubt without English subtitles. No Hong Kong version that I'm aware of. Was also available as a download from this disappeared forum.
LaserDisc Anime Akira (Criterion Collection CAV version) This 1992 letterboxed disc included the English (digital) and Japanese (analog) soundtracks as well as parts of the Akira Production Report and the entire English version of the comic in still frame. No closed captions (or subtitles), though -- grrrr.
LaserDisc Feature (Sci-Fi) 2001: A Space Odyssey (Criterion CAV version) Out-of-print. A special edition DVD was released 2001-06-12, but I'm almost positive it doesn't have the special features of this LD set (I forget what they were, exactly -- IMDb doesn't say).
LaserDisc Feature (Comedy) Big Top Pee-Wee (apparently only released unmatted) Out-of-print as of 2001-05-11, and no DVD on the horizon.
LaserDisc (Box Set) Feature (Sci-Fi) Close Encounters Of The Third Kind (Criterion CAV release) The DVD does not include any of the special features of this 1990 LD box set (Criterion CC 1241L).
LaserDisc Feature (Comedy) Crocodile Dundee (letterboxed) Released 1994-09-07 and now out-of-print. No DVD on the horizon as of 2001-05-11. Perhaps it'll accompany a DVD release of part 3?
LaserDisc Feature (Horror) Food Of The Gods II Out-of-print and no DVD as of 2002-10-14, though there is an in-print VHS.
LaserDisc Feature (Drama) Foxes Out-of-print and no DVD on the horizon as of 2001-05-12.
LaserDisc Feature (Drama / Fantasy) House of the Spirits, The (letterboxed version) As of 2003-06-16, there is a DVD available, but it's Pan & Scan. Bravo has also aired the film letterboxed, with no notice on the front talking about the film being altered from its original version, but presumably at least language is cut.
LaserDisc Feature (Horror / Drama) Hunger, The (letterboxed version) Out-of-print and no DVD on the horizon as of 2001-05-12.
LaserDisc Feature (Drama) / Special Interest (Documentary) Looking For Richard (letterboxed) Out-of-print and no DVD on the horizon as of 2003-01-27. Not sure if there was also a full-frame LD to avoid, but I don't think so.
LaserDisc Feature (Sci-Fi) Metropolis (Giorgio Moroder score version) Out-of-print and no DVD on the horizon as of 2001-05-12.
LaserDisc Feature (Drama) Night On Earth (letterboxed) Out-of-print and no DVD on the horizon as of 2003-04-01, though oddly, there is a "Collector's Widescreen Edition" VHS in print. IFC has also shown a letterboxed print.
LaserDisc Feature (Comedy) Nude Bomb, The Out-of-print and no DVD on the horizon as of 2006-11-05 (oddly, IMDb's page for the title does have a live "DVD details" link, but the resulting page is blank). Available only in Pan & Scan.
LaserDisc Feature (Horror) Poltergeist II: The Other Side (letterboxed version) No DVD as of 2000-10-17.
LaserDisc Feature (Horror) Return Of The Living Dead Part II (no lettterboxed version available?) Out-of-print and no DVD on the horizon as of 2001-05-12. Perhaps after part 1 comes out. In the meantime, there's an in-print VHS.
LaserDisc Feature (Horror) Shrunken Heads Not sure when this and the VHS went out-of-print. Possibly some time around 1998.
LaserDisc Feature (Sci-Fi) Thing (From Another World), The (1951) (Collector's Edition, Image 6996TU) Out-of-print and no DVD on the horizon as of 2001-05-12.
LaserDisc Music Video / TV / Feature (Comedy) Return Of Spinal Tap, The None as of 2001-05-12, and probably never will be. Presumably the material on this LD doesn't appear on the current "T.I.S.T." DVD.
VHS TV (Anime) Robotech Perfect Collection: Macross, vol. 6 Went out-of-print several years ago when Streamline died. A few copies may still be floating around somewhere.
VHS TV (Anime) Robotech Perfect Collection: Mospeada, vol. 7 Went out-of-print several years ago when Streamline died. A few copies may still be floating around somewhere.

Low-priority

Format Category Title Info
(any) Feature (Drama) Christine Jorgensen Story, The As far as I can tell, has never been released on video in any format in the U.S. as of 2001-05-12, though it has showed on TV.
(any) Feature (Horror) Food of the Gods, The Out-of-print in all formats in the U.S. as of 2002-10-14. Not sure what formats it has been in print in.
(any) Feature (Drama) Night They Raided Minsky's, The VHS is out-of-print as of 2007-03-03, and seemingly no DVD on the horizon. No mention of an LD on IMDb, though I didn't search elsewhere.
(any) Music Video (Punk / New Wave) / Special Interest (Documentary) Urgh! A Music War I believe this 1981 film was only ever released on non-letterboxed VHS, and it has been out-of-print on that format for years and years. As of 2000-09-21, it has been recently shown on either the Sundance Channel or the Independent Film Channel. If it's shown widescreen here, I'd like a copy recorded off cable rather than a copy of the prerecorded version.
(any) TV (Game Show) Jeopardy: Celebrity Jeopardy episode with Jodie Foster First aired on ABC 2001-02-05.
(any) TV (Horror Movie) Killdozer This 1974 TV movie has never been released on video, to my knowledge.
(any) TV (Talk / Comedy) Late Night with David Letterman: the "dub episode" Per voice actor Peter Fernandez' IMDb bio, a repeat episode of Letterman's NBC show was once aired with all the voices redubbed, with no explanation. (Fernandez voiced Letterman.) A search did not reveal when this aired, and no footage on YouTube.
DVD Animation Chinese Ghost Story, A: The Tsui Hark Animation Out-of-print as of 2001-05-12.
DVD Animation Swan Princess, The UK region 2 PAL DVD. Apparently no NTSC version as of 2002-09-20. There was a U.S. LD, but it was Pan & Scan.
DVD Animation Wallace & Gromit's Cracking Contraptions UK region 2 PAL DVD, available only from shopwallaceandgromit.com. In the U.S., the shorts were available to subscribers of atomfilms.shockwave.com, but no longer as of 2003-09-08.
DVD Anime Robot Carnival Limited-edition (with booklet) Japanese R2 DVD. My understanding was that the English soundtrack was present, but not English subtitles (perhaps on the non limited-ed. version??), but this description disagrees. Anyway, no U.S. DVD on the horizon as of 2001-05-17.
DVD Feature / TV Body Bags (AKA John Carpenter Presents Body Bags) Out-of-print as of 2003-09-05.
DVD Feature (Drama / Western) Dances With Wolves (1-disc DD version, not 2-disc DTS version) Out-of-print along with the rest of the MGM-controlled Image titles as of 2001-05-17. If a new 1-disc DTS version gets made, I'd like that instead.
DVD Feature (Sci-Fi) Invaders From Mars (1953) Out-of-print as of 2001-05-12.
DVD Feature (Comedy / Classic) Marx Brothers Box: Animal Crackers / Horse Feathers / Duck Soup Out-of-print as of 2004-04-20.
DVD Feature (Action / Hong Kong) Project S As of 2003-07-20, a subtitled NTSC version isn't available in the U.S., though there may be one in H.K. that's kept out of the U.S. market by Disney, who sells the film in a crappily dubbed version with the dishonest title "Supercop 2". This is the Region 2 / PAL version.
DVD Feature (Monster / Horror / Action / Sci-Fi) Reptilicus The 2001 DVD of this reportedly so-bad-it's-good film is out of print as of 2007-06-19.
DVD (Box Set) Feature (Sci-Fi / Action / Horror) Species Trilogy Out-of-print as of 2008-01-09. The Blu-ray release of the first film leaves out some of the documentaries that were on the 4th bonus disc in this set. Another OOP option instead of this box set would be the Species Trilogy Limited Edition Collection, which I believe had the same 4 discs, along with a booklet and a "Sil" statuette.
DVD Feature / Special Interest(Documentary) Star Wait Out-of-print as of 2008-02-05. Includes commentary by Joel Hodgson, Trace Beaulieu, and Josh Weinstein. Not sure what the difference is, if any, between the above-linked version, which Amazon claims was put out by Monkeys In Silk Productions on 2005-10-27 and this one, which Amazon claims was put out by Unicorn on 2005-11-01.
DVD TV (Comedy / Music) Secret Policeman's Ball, The: The Complete Edition UK region 2 PAL DVD. No U.S. version as of 2003-02-08, nor was the entire series available on LaserDisc or VHS here.
LaserDisc Animation / Feature Cool World (letterboxed Not sure if there was a Pan & Scan version to be avoided along with the letterboxed one, but probably not. No DVD on the horizon as of 2002-12-01.
LaserDisc Animation Fantasia: 50th Anniversary Limited Commemorative Edition Out-of-print and will not be re-released. Per an eBay description, the bonus materials are: Original 1941 trailer, documentary "The Making of a Masterpiece", Certificate of Authenticity, commemorative lithograph of the original concept painting Fantasia 1939, 16 Page 50th Anniversary Commemorative Program, and an insert describing all 63 chapter stops. I haven't compared this to the extras available with the 3-DVD set yet.
LaserDisc Animation Peter Pan (CAV version) CAV LD recently out-of-print as of 2000-02-23. Limited Edtition DVD came out, but was missing the special features of this LD, "You Can Fly -- The Making Of Peter Pan" and "The Story Of Peter Pan" featurettes, concept and story art, and behind-the-scenes audio supplements.
LaserDisc Feature (Drama) Accidental Tourist, The (letterboxed) Not sure if there was a Pan & Scan version to be avoided along with the letterboxed one. No DVD on the horizon as of 2002-12-01.
LaserDisc Feature (Drama) Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (letterboxed) Out-of-print and no DVD on the horizon as of 2003-03-07.
LaserDisc Feature (Sci-Fi) ALIEN (CAV Box Set) Long out-of-print as of 1999-06-04. Has extras missing from the ALIEN Legacy DVD box set version (even including the fifth send-away disc).
LaserDisc Feature (Drama / Comedy) American Friends Apparently not letterboxed, but the only other format available as of 2002-09-20 is a non-letterboxed VHS.
LaserDisc Feature (Comedy / Action) Flashback (1990) (apparently no letterboxed release) Out-of-print and no DVD on the horizon as of 2001-05-16.
LaserDisc Feature (Drama / Action) French Connection, The (letterboxed) Out-of-print and no DVD as of 2001-03-01.
LaserDisc Feature (Comedy) Hot Shots! As of 2000-05-04, this (non-letterboxed) LD was still available from reel.com. As of 2000-09-05, it's gone, and still no DVD.
LaserDisc Feature (Horror / Drama) Innocents, The (1961) (letterboxed) Out-of-print and no DVD on the horizon as of 2001-05-12.
LaserDisc Feature (Fantasy / Comedy / Adventure / Family) Jabberwocky Out-of-print and no DVD on the horizon as of 2001-05-12.
LaserDisc Feature (Comedy / Action) Jumpin' Jack Flash (apparently no letterboxed release) Out-of-print and no DVD on the horizon as of 2001-05-16.
LaserDisc Feature (Drama) Lady Jane (letterboxed) This LD, released by Paramount in 1996-09-17, is out-of-print and no DVD is on the horizon as of 2001-05-12.
LaserDisc Feature (Drama) Light Of Day (apparently no letterboxed release) Out-of-print and no DVD on the horizon as of 2001-05-12.
LaserDisc Feature (Sci-Fi) Metropolis (non-Giorgio-Moroder score version -- actually there may be more than one) Out-of-print. As of 2001-05-12, two U.S. DVDs have been put out, by Madacy and Xoom, and both are reportedly terrible.
LaserDisc Feature (Horror / Drama) Mister Frost (apparently only released Pan & Scan) Out-of-print and no DVD on the horizon as of 2003-02-03. Also known as "Mr. Frost" -- not sure which spelling is used on the LD.
LaserDisc Feature (Drama) Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle (letterboxed) Out-of-print and no DVD on the horizon as of 2001-05-12.
LaserDisc Feature (Fantasy / Family) NeverEnding Story, The (letterboxed version) No DVD as of 2000-10-17.
LaserDisc Feature (Fantasy) Photographing Fairies (full-screen only, I think) No DVD as of 2002-09-15.
LaserDisc Feature (Horror) Poltergeist III (apparently only released Pan & Scan) No DVD as of 2003-01-18.
LaserDisc Feature (Drama / Comedy) Pretty In Pink (letterboxed version) Out-of-print and no DVD on the horizon as of 2001-05-12.
LaserDisc Feature (Horror) Reflecting Skin, The (only released unmatted?) Out-of-print and no DVD on the horizon as of 2001-05-12.
LaserDisc Feature (Comedy) S.O.B. Out-of-print and no DVD planned as of 2000-12-08. I got a copy of this LD on eBay, but the seller failed to mention the laser rot on disc 1, side 2. An additional copy with rot on other sides besides that one would be acceptable.
LaserDisc Feature (Musical) Song Of The South (Hong Kong release) OOP import LD. The Hong Kong LD is the only official NTSC non-VHS release of the film without subtitles, and there may never be another such release anywhere in the world (due to political correctness issues). As of 2000-10-12, there have apparently been no official DVD releases, though there is apparently a tough-to-find bootleg Hong Kong DVD with questionable visual quality.
LaserDisc Feature (Comedy) This Is Spinal Tap (Criterion CAV release, CC 1390L) Out-of-print. As of 2001-05-22, the two "Spinal Tap" DVDs that've come out (the Criterion DVD itself famously OOP) have been missing the still-frame material from this LD (chapters 72-74, "Structuring Spinal Tap: scripts and scribbles", "Promotional stuff", and "A few stills").
LaserDisc Feature (Drama / Sci-Fi) Until The End Of The World (letterboxed) Out-of-print and no DVD on the horizon as of 2003-04-22.
LaserDisc Feature (Comedy / Action / Drama) XYZ Murders, The This is the Japanese release of Crimewave, which never had a U.S. LD release and as of 2001-05-12 has no DVD on the horizon. The LD has Japanese subtitles. Not sure whether it's letterboxed.
LaserDisc Music Video / Special Interest NewOrder Story Japanese import LD has 80 minutes of material not on the VHS (which appears to be out-of-print as of 1999-06-04 anyway).
LaserDisc Music Video Rush: A Show Of Hands OOP. No official NTSC DVD as of 2003-03-30, but there's apparently a bootleg Brazilian DVD (NTSC) which is likely mastered from the LD.
LaserDisc TV (Drama) Hotel Room (Japanese release) As of 2001-05-12, this series was apparently only released on VHS in the U.S. This Japanese release has Japanese subtitles (intruding on the picture due to the show's 1.33 format).
LaserDisc TV (Animation) Robotech Masters volume 2 The U.S. version of episode 43 is missing on the Perfect Collection tapes. This LD would be the best place to get a copy of the episode until the DVD comes out. Might also want to get the episodes at the end of each series which Perfect Collection never got to.
LaserDisc TV (Animation) Robotech 2: The Sentinels Will eventually come out on DVD, if all goes to plan, but this is the best version in the meantime.
VHS Feature (Horror) Resurrected, The (1992) reel.com still had this tape for sale as of 1999-10-11. Gone now, and no DVD as of 2000-02-23. Dunno if there's also an out-of-print LD.
VHS TV (British / Reality / Game Show / Science) Best Of Scrapheap Challenge, The As of 2001-01-16 (and likely forever) only in print in PAL VHS format in the U.K.
VHS TV (Sci-Fi / British) Doctor Who: Five Doctors, The (original release) This is the out-of-print (?) original version of the show, not the special edition (which has been released on DVD, VHS, and OOP LD in the U.S.). The original version was only ever released on VHS. The U.S. version (released on Playhouse Video, the children's video label of CBS/Fox) was actually edited slightly compared to the U.K. VHS, but of course has the original pre-SE special effects intact, some of which were superior to the SE re-dos.
VHS TV (Drama) Hotel Room Out-of-print and no DVD on the horizon as of 2001-05-12. Apparently no U.S. LD was ever made, though a Japanese one (with subtitles) was.

Unreleased

(any) TV (Comedy) Valerie, Seasons 1 and 2 I'm only interested in seasons 1 and 2 of this show, due to the appearances of Edie McClurg's humorous character Mrs. Patty Poole. According to the IMDb, after the second season she was only in one more episode, "Movin' On", the first episode of the third season, which was when the show was renamed to "Valerie's Family" (later "The Hogan Family"). It appears this show has never been released on video, and I don't see any indication that it's due to be, as of 2008-06-14.
Blu-Ray Disc Special Interest (Calibration) Digital Video Essentials HD Basics (or perhaps Digital Video Essentials High Definition, if a Blu-Ray version is made and it includes more tests than HD Basics) To be released 2008-03-01?
Blu-Ray Disc Special Interest (Calibration) FPD Benchmark Software for the Professional As of 2007-08-24, the disc is only available to members of the trade, not to the public.
Blu-Ray Disc TV (Sci-Fi / Action) Heroes: Season 1 As of 2008-04-10, this is only out on DVD and HD DVD. Hopefully it'll come out on Blu-Ray now that HD DVD is dead.
DVD Feature (Drama? / Japanese) Akai Tsuki (AKA Red Moon?) A Tokiwa Takako movie playing in theaters in Japan as of 2004-02, I believe. It seems very likely there will be a Hong Kong version of this (with English subtitles), since according to that discussion forum post, it was filmed in China with an all-Chinese (but Takako) cast.
DVD TV (Comedy / British) Spaced: The Complete Series To be released on 2008-07-22 (previously only avaialble on Region 2).
