Dan Harkless' Smartphones Buying Guide: Introduction

The original basis for this guide was the old SmartphoneGuide.com website (no longer available even on archive.org). After that site was changed in late 2002 to just redirect to msmobiles.com, which only includes info on Microsoft OS devices, I resurrected the original multi-platform list here.

After that, I made a bunch of corrections to the data, added several new fields beyond the original "Phone", "OS", and "Networks" data, and added a large number of new phone models.

I have not made any material changes to this guide since summer 2003 (have just updated links that have become broken), and unfortunately due to lack of time, I will probably not be updating it unless I decide to replace my smartphone and have to do a shootout between a few different options. The comparison guide originally resulted in me buying a Handspring Treo 300. I later replaced that with a Hitachi G1000, then went back to the Treo 300, then went to a palmOne Treo 600, then to a Palm Treo 700p, and most recently, to a Palm Centro.

Now, you can either view the database on:

or:

The latter is useful for side-by-side comparison of any two or more records, or to keep field headings always on screen without having to repeat them within the table. Note that you can resize the frames as desired (e.g. to make the top frame only big enough for the column headings).
