Dan Harkless' Windows Mobile SSH Apps Buying Guide: Introduction

This is a survey of all the Windows Mobile SSH applications that I'm aware of. Unlike with my Palm OS Terminal Apps guide, I haven't included applications that can do telnet and raw TCP ports but not SSH, since unlike in the Palm world, the best Windows Mobile SSH app that I've tried (PockeTTY) also has a flawless raw TCP ports implementation.

If you're interested in non-SSH apps, Chris De Herrera's SSH Emulator / Telnet FAQ looks to have a pretty comprehensive list of them, though as of this writing, it was last updated in 2003 and many of the links are out-of-date.

Note that my testing was done in 2003 on my Hitachi G1000 (a Pocket PC 2002 Phone Edition device which I am no longer using), and one of the main things I was testing was how well the applications supported its built-in thumbboard (and how well they supported workarounds for keys not typeable with it, using Soft Input Panel (SIP) popup keyboards and "Keys" menus).

Since that time, I have not updated any columns except the Application column, which has the current URL and latest software versions as of the date the database was updated. The rest of the columns give information as of the "Version tested". I've also added a couple of new SSH apps that didn't exist in 2003, although of course without any testing data. If I go back from Palm OS and purchase a new Windows Mobile device I'll try out the latest versions of all these apps and update the table.

Now, you can either view the database on:

or:

The latter is useful for side-by-side comparison of any two or more records. Note that (on desktop, at least) you can resize the frames as desired.
