A twitch
Nothing and all
Air rent in twain
Cruel, tangible tunnel
Tiny and awful
Disruption in mist
Beautiful waves
White cycles sliding
Sneeze of a god
Ringing still – then
Gone
Startling silence
Absence bewitching
Stimulus removed;
Over compensation:
Never-living noise
Heard to great degree
Wind trapped
Cautiously scouting
Waters too cold
Later to return
Action undone?
Dream or feeling.
Rules can't apply
Unrespected and unwelcomed
But cold metal – unforgiving
Heavy suddenly
Digits limp and forgetful
Wooden drum – single beat
Finally, Sound
Revoking his own exile
Rhythmic and liquid deliverance
Yawning cavity seated 'tween orbs
Giving generously of scarlet fruit
Sight rewarding, damning
Too rich for now
Turning
This poem, and indeed each line, is about something very specific. Did you get the imagery? If not, try reading it again.
Still no good? Okay, the poem is about shooting someone. Armed with that knowledge, you should be able to re-read it and understand what the images are representing.
Don't freak out about the subject matter (nor the brain matter!) — we read The Stranger by Camus in that class, and Killing an Arab (based on the novel) was still in heavy rotation back then.
