I don't know if those curved wedges have / had some kind of purpose, or if they're purely ornamental, but I hadn't seen them before in traditional Japanese architecture before visiting Kyôto (though I've since seen them on Iron Chef on a restaurant that wasn't in Kyôto, so they're apparently not unique solely to Kyôto, though they may have originated there).
