Album Description

In October 2001, Spümcø (site went down in late 2002 or early 2003 while they worked on the "Ren & Stimpy 'Adult Party Cartoon'" and doesn't seem to have ever returned) was soliciting comments on their discussion board about their new show "The Ripping Friends".

I had some strong opinions on why the show was vastly inferior to "Ren & Stimpy", and wanted to post, but they had a gimmick going where they required you to use a (real) headshot graphic for your avatar.

I didn't have one handy, so I whipped out my DCR-PC5 and took these shots. They were taken inside at night, and I hadn't yet bought the flash accessory for my camera, so I had a problem with low-light CCD noise.

The only way I could alleviate this was by pointing a powerful D-cell flashlight at my head. Actually, the flashlight was too strong, and if pointed directly at my face would wash out my features (I used this to creative effect in some of the later shots). Therefore, I had to angle the beam just right so that it glanced off my face. The lights in my kitchen were off so there wouldn't be CCD noise in the background where the flashlight wasn't illuminating.

Below are my favorite shots from the session. So far I've used two of them as discussion board avatars, in different sizes according to the requirements of the various boards, from PuriKura sticker-sized to wallet-sized. :-) (I keep them handy here for when I'm signing up for new boards.)

If you're morbidly curious, you can also check out the rest of the shots from the session (and the raw versions of a couple of cropped/edited ones from this page). Early shots suffer from CCD noise because I hadn't yet come up with the flashlight trick. Others look extremely goofy because they haven't yet had the necessary cropping and you can see me pointing the flashlight at myself within frame. :-)
