If you ask most kids what their favorite holiday is, I'm sure most say "Christmas". For as far back as I can remember, though, my favorite holiday has been Halloween. This is despite the fact that my Mom raised me and my brothers to be healthy eaters (along with being vegetarians), and we'd have to throw away the vast majority of our Trick-or-Treating spoils when we got home (keeping only the apples, raisin boxes, oriental honey-sesame cookies, plastic spider rings, and quarters).
So for me the candy was not an end unto itself, but merely an excuse for
walking up to people's houses so I could enjoy their Halloween decorations,
show off my costume, and enjoy others' costumes. The candy was, if you will,
just a "Halloween fun delivery mechanism".
Below are pages devoted to the costumes I've worn over the years at Halloween (and a few other events). Some of my childhood costumes, of course, I can't take much credit for, but as of age eight or earlier I was into designing my own.
Unfortunately I don't really have the skillset to make costumes from scratch, like the real masters of masquerading, but I have done some creative things with combinations of storebought components.
All of the pictures on these pages can be clicked on for an enlarged, uncropped view (except for those photos taken by my 640x480-resolution DCR-PC5, in which case clicking will get you an uncropped view, if available, but not an enlarged one).
The "Elements" for each costume are listed in descending order of location
from the top of my head down to my feet (as seen in the primary photo for the
costume), and don't list non-visible components like spirit gum (or underwear
).
